Japanese people have often been commended for being some of the most polite across the region, if not the globe. And that comes as to no surprise, given their insistence on respect and courtesy regardless of social setting. But as it would turn out, that capacity for civility and decorum can also been found in our everyday fellow Malaysians too!

M’sian student seen bowing respectfully to driver for stopping at zebra crossing

Just recently, TikTok user @syedazzman took to sharing his encounter with a local secondary school student that occurred while he had been driving behind the wheel. Occurring right outside a school’s main entrance, he stopped his vehicle right before a zebra-crossing to allow her to make her way across the street.

Naturally, the student made her way over the other side, but much to his surprise, she then proceeded to stop in her tracks after safely reaching the opposite end of the street. Turning to the driver, she bowed respectfully at him in thanks for granting her passage before going off on her own way.

“Japan ❌ Malaysia ✅”, he captioned in the video, alluding to the habit of bowing most often seen performed by Japanese school children.

Netizens applaud her for her manners

The video, which has since been viewed over a whopping 1.2 million times as of writing in just two days since it was uploaded has since garnered plenty of praise from netizens over her unprompted show of politeness.

Some netizens have also urged for such customs to be normalised in Malaysia.

And while some may be surprised to witness such a show of good manners from youngsters, the act is in fact incredibly commonplace in places such as Japan, South Korea, and even China, where even young elementary school students have been seen bowing to vehicles that have stopped for them after making it across a road.
