While it’s possible that friends may engage in friendly banter, teasing each other occasionally it’s important to know the boundaries as teasing could lead to unintentional hurt. Just recently, a Malaysian named Jeffry Rais Jamaludin has shared his story to Kosmo! where he was constantly teased in school.

Hailing from Melaka, the 21-year-old student revealed that he was once teased by his classmates for having parents that work as cleaners. However, this did not deter him from his studies as he was able to achieve 9A’s in his SPM examination and subsequently receiving a scholarship from Majlis Amanah Raya (Mara) to continue his tertiary education in France!

“I’ve studied hard because I want to prove to society that people who are born in less fortunate families can also succeed and do well in their studies”, he said.

He said that his prior to this, his classmates would constantly tease him as his father works as a garbage truck driver while his mother works as a cleaner. Since then, he has made the decision to study hard and obtain excellent grades for all his exams. Following his journey to France, Jeffry said that he is currently studying for his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering at Université Toulouse 3-Paul Sabatier.

Living a frugal life, doesn’t want to burden his family

While he is far away from home, Jeffry remains frugal and manages his money well, making it a point to not burden his family more by asking for allowance to spend. He revealed that he would often eat at home and would only eat out once a month.

“I would just follow recipes from YouTube, or I would call my mother for advice”, he mentioned.

Being in a foreign country, Jeffry doesn’t deprive himself from exploring as he mentioned that the money, he saved would be used for travelling. Speaking to Jeffry’s parents, they were initially hesitant to let Jeffry head over to France but seeing that it was an opportunity of a lifetime, they allowed him to continue his studies in France.

“He really has not asked us for money even though we offer to send him some”, she said, feeling proud of how independent he is.

While Jeffry has yet to complete his studies, he is determined that he wants to change his family’s standard of living and is confident that he will be able to do so as long as he works hard.
