Conversing in one’s mother tongue is a walk in the park for most of us, but how about speaking our national language? In a show of genuine Malaysian-ness, two Chinese friends displayed their fluency in Malay during a lighthearted conversation.
According to Xiao Rou, she and her friend had recorded the live video on a whim. “To prove that not all Chinese speak Malay with a slang,” the caption reads, to which the two begin to talk to each other while answering viewers’ questions.

“We are Malaysian after all”
Speaking to Wau Post, Xiao Rou explained that the both of them are from Borneo. “We regularly use Malay to communicate with our friends,” she said.
Midway throughout the clip, the video switches to a video of Xiao Rou’s friend singing a Malay song. Some users were tickled by this part and noted similarities in his voice to that of local artists. “From laughing to Anuar Zain real quick,” one person humorously pointed out.
When one viewer asked if they could converse in Chinese, they then smoothly transitioned to speaking Mandarin! Proving their fluency in all languages, the pair impressed many netizens with their native accents in both Malay and Mandarin.
Since the video went viral, Xiao Rou is happy that many are taking the video in a positive way. “We’re simply trying to spread the message that we should be proud of our national language,” she asserts.
And proud we are! It’s always nice to see Malaysians bonding over the beauty of our national language. Let’s strive to uphold our national identity no matter where we are.
