If there is one thing that no parent wants to ever experience, it’s the devastating heartbreak and grief that comes from losing a child. Sadly in the case of 45-year-old Mr Chantren from Negeri Sembilan, that would be the pain that he had to endure after receiving a call on March 3rd, 2023 from Sungai Buloh Prison, informing him that his 19-year-old son had suddenly passed away a day prior.

As reported by local newspaper Sinar Harian, Mr Chatren said that he was instructed by prison officials to collect his late-son’s body from Hospital Sungai Buloh in Selangor, but were told that they first needed to sign off on a series of documents before they could do so.

“When we looked at his remains, we could not recognise him due to the autopsy, as well as the fact that his head was shaved,” he told members of the press at his home in Taman Desa Permai yesterday (March 5th, 2023).

He adds that he did not know why his son was in prison, as he only recalled that he was living and working in the Selayang area prior to his death. Regardless of which, the mourning couple brought their son’s body back to their home at around 12.00am midnight and began making preparations for his funerary rites and cremation.

Was later told his son is alive

However, they received a shock when they were told that the body they were about to cremate did not belong to their son.

“Just as we were about to perform the last rites, we nearly cremated the body, we suddenly received a call from the prison to inform us that our son is still alive before requesting for a video call,”

“Our son was arrested, declared dead, and now returns alive. This has caused us a lot of confusion,” he said.

What’s more, Mr Chatren’s family has spent around RM20,000 for the purposes of putting together the funeral, from renting canopies to ordering food and arranging for the crematory services.

The prison officials have yet to explain to the couple as to why their son was detained on February 28th, but arrived later at his home to retrieve the body of the unknown man. Mr Chatren also requested to meet with his son in person. His wife, 48-year-old Parameiswary, has since lodged a police report over the matter reports Harian Metro.

Meanwhile, Miaforce Association Chairman, S. Dayalan who was also at the scene urged the responsible party to explain what had actually occurred to the family as it not only caused confusion, but also affected their emotions.
