“Life is hard”, M’sian Nasi Lemak vendor determines to keep her prices at RM1.20 despite inflation

Despite the cost of living increasing, this 66-year-old single mother has determined to continue selling her Nasi Lemak at RM1.20, wanting to ensure that people won’t go a day without a proper meal.

According to local newspaper Sin Chew Daily, “Nasi Lemak Pisang Mak Som”, is a stall run by a single mother for years in Sungai Petani. Sharing a day in her life, Mak Som revealed that her day would start as early as 2:30am, preparing the ingredients she needs to make her Nasi Lemak.

With the help of his son, she is able to pack and sell up to 400 packets of Nasi Lemak a day. When asked about her specialty, she shared that she is adamant in using banana leaves to wrap her Nasi Lemak.

“If I can’t get banana leaves for wrapping, I would rather not operate”, she said.

When asked why she wouldn’t choose another alternative, Mak Som shared that the reason she is determined to only use banana leaves is because she doesn’t want to compromise the quality of her Nasi Lemak.

With that said, throughout the years, Mak Som has garnered ample support from the community, selling out her Nasi Lemak as early as 8am!

Life is tough, but all will pass

Revealing that she’s gone through a divorce, Mak Som decided to move to Sri Putra Garden in hopes of a better life. Prior to selling Nasi Lemak, the dedicated woman had worked several jobs from being a cleaner to factory worker, experiencing hardships along the way.

However, all the experiences have shaped her to be stronger, leading her to start her own business. And thankfully, her culinary skills and perseverance have been inherited by her son, who graduated from Mara Technical College in Automotive Studies. After graduating, her son had set foot to Australia working in the automobile industry, before heading back to Malaysia to continue her mother’s legacy and serving the community.

Following their resilience in life, the mother-and-son duo have vowed to continue keeping their prices at Rm1.20, so that many people can afford a warm meal, even during times of hardship.
