No matter the choice of career or occupation, one should never be judged or belittled based on the line of work they’ve chosen. Just recently, a young woman has broken stereotypes by becoming a butcher despite her young age.

When it comes to butchery, many would think that the role is for middle aged men and women. However, for this Malaysian, she has decided to break stereotypes and operate a store in the wet market, selling chicken. According to local newspaper Harian Metro, Ummi Saffiyyah is a 25-year-old woman from Sentul, who’s assisting her cousin Nur Farah Izzati Halim in running a stall at the wet market in Chow Kit.

“Many people are shocked to find that my cousin and I (both 25) are working as butchers”, she said.

She mentioned that many people wouldn’t expect young women like them to run stalls in the wet market. However, her skill sets that she has acquired proved otherwise. She shared that many people would ask her why they’re working in a wet market. To which she would answer saying that it’s an honest living.

“I’m happy with what I’m doing now as this job requires hard skills”, she revealed, adding that she spent 3 months learning the techniques of butchering a chicken.

Not ashamed, it’s an honest living

Prior to assisting her cousin at the stall, Ummi shared that she was working in an office. After resigning from her last job, she decided to invest all her time in the store and never looked back since.

Working at a wet market would mean that a stench might follow especially when you spend long hours there. When asked about it, she said,

“I’m used to it, and this is what I need to go through if I want to continue working here.”

Well done Ummi and we hope you’ll continue to do what you love!
