A 67-year-old senior citizen and her family were left to fend for themselves against 10 different loan sharks when her 37-year-old son went into hiding after borrowing a whopping sum of RM85,000 from them. As reported by local paper Sin Chew Daily, the woman has since made the decision to disown him entirely as a consequence for leaving his family in the lurch with his debts.

The matter was brought to light in the press after the woman had sought for help from Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) Subang District chief Chiew Kai Heng, who held a press conference to help clarify a number of facts pertaining to the case. It was said that initially when the woman’s son had requested to take out the loans, he did so using false pretenses by claiming that his mother was ill and he needed the money to help foot the cost of her medical expenses.

This was done without the family’s knowledge, until they started receiving threats and were intimidated by loan sharks over her son’s failure to pay up what he had owed. Upon realising that the man’s mother was not ill, the loan sharks even went so far as to slander the family’s reputation by claiming that they were all scammers and cheats.

Had previously gotten his older brother to pay up for him

Apparently, this was not the first time that her younger son had borrowed money from these unlicensed moneylenders either, as his 47-year-old elder brother had previously helped him to settle RM70,000 in debt. She would go on to discover that he had borrowed as much as RM85,000 from 10 different loan sharks after finding a handwritten ledger book that her younger son had kept in his car.

The elderly woman adds that as she is still working as a school bus driver and has a stable source of income, she never had any reason to resort to borrowing money from loan sharks to begin with. They hope that by speaking out, the loan sharks will stop harassing their family over debts that are not theirs to bear to begin with, while clearing their family’s name of any misconceptions.
