In a horrific turn of events, a young teenaged boy was killed as he was cycling onto a main road in Klang on Wednesday (September 7th 2022). As reported by local news outlet Berita Harian, the 13-year-old had been cycling with a group of friends at the time of the incident before he was struck and run over by a lorry as he was turning onto a main road from Persiaran Hamzah Alang.
According to North Klang OCPD Asst Comm S Vijaya Rao, the incident took place at 3.30pm in the afternoon.
“At the same time, the driver of the garbage lorry that was driven by a man could not stop in time to avoid the victim, before running into him.” he said.
The victim, a Form 1 student from SMK Tengku Idris Shah Kapar, sustained critical injuries and was later confirmed dead at the scene of the accident.
Teen cyclist killed after being run-over by garbage lorry
A 1-minute long video obtained from the dashcam of a vehicle travelling behind the garbage lorry shows how the harrowing incident unfolded, and has since been widely shared across the local social media space.
The victim and his friends could be seen cycling in a group and were turning into the main road from a small bridge. While cut-off from view, the victim appears to have then been knocked over by the lorry from behind, before being run-over and crushed.
His body and the mangled wreck of his bicycle could then be seen laying on the road after the lorry had moved out of the way and came to a full stop. The lorry driver was seen immediately disembarking from his vehicle to check on the condition of the victim as his friends rushed over. Other drivers soon came to a stop in hopes of rendering aid.
Victim was travelling from his grandfathers home
It was believed that the victim had been travelling from his grandfather’s home from Jalan Nenas, although it is not known where he was headed. The 26-year-old lorry driver from Kapar has since recorded his statement with the authorities, and the case will be investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987 for driving in a reckless manner or at a dangerous speed.
Friends of the victim who were riding bicycles with him at the time, in addition to any other witnesses at the scene, have been urged to come forward and file a statement with the police.
