One of the most essential basic human rights is to have access to clean and drinkable water. With that said, continued pollution of main water sources has led to a rising concern as to whether this is attainable for those living on the poverty line, or in rural areas of the country with poor infrastructure. One such incident has recently gone viral over social media, after a woman took to sharing her shock when dark, coffee-coloured water began flowing out of the taps in her home in Kelantan.

Kelantan woman expresses shock at ‘coffee’ coloured water flowing from her taps

Speaking to Wau Post, Mrs. Noriah revealed that prior to discovering the dark coloured water from her taps, she had already left a load of clothes in the washing machine to launder and was about to clean her home. After cleaning her home, she decided to wash some plates that were left in her sink and upon turning the tap loose, was shocked to find contaminated water raining down.

She then filmed the video and shared it on social media to highlight the matter and claims that this was not the first time that such an incident has occurred in her house. After the video had gone viral online, Noriah received a call from National Water Services Commission (SPAN), asking about the condition of the water in her area.

“They told me that they’ll make a report to Air Kelantan (AKSB) and true enough, one of the officers from the Kelantan Water Department had contacted me in less than an hour”, she recalled.

Checks reveal that the dark-coloured water may have been caused by a valve change

Following that, the Kelantan Water Department sent two of their officers to come over and check the condition of the water. She was then told that the reason for her water to be contaminated could be due to the fact that they’ve just changed the valve at the water plant.

“I told the staff that they should’ve checked the water passing through the valve before opening it up again”, she said.

After that, at around noon, she received a call from the Kelantan Water Deparment to check on whether the condition of water at her home has improved. She then told the officers that the water is no longer black but it was still murky.

In total, Mrs. Noriah had received 4 different calls from the officers asking if the quality of the water has gotten better.

“They gave me their WhatsApp number and I sent them videos of the water condition”, she mentioned.

As of now, Mrs. Noriah has shared that the water conditions have gone back to normal and they have access to clean water again. Unfortunately as this has been a regular occurrence, she expressed her frustrations at their lack of consistent access to clean water, which has made completing some chores, such as washing white clothes, incredibly difficult.

“This has happened so frequently that we would have to handwash our white clothes so that it will not get ruined”, she said.

Mrs. Noriah has urged officers and staff to always check the quality of the water flowing before allowing members of the public to access it for consumption.
