Operating a home-based food business earning between RM2,000 to RM3,000 per month, this Malaysian couple was surprised to see their income increase significantly after investing in a vending machine.
M’sian couple earns over RM10k a month through a vending machine
According to local newswire agency Bernama, it was reported that the couple, Amin Afifi Yaakob and Yufaeza Yussof now generates an income up to RM15,000 a month! Discovering about the People’s Income Initiative (IPR) vending machine through Facebook, the couple managed to sign up for it since October last year.
Registering specifically under the Food Entrepreneur Initiative (INSAN), the couple now has a vending machine placed at the Permatang Pauh Universiti Teknologi MARA. Thankfully, the response towards their vending machine has been extremely encouraging.
“We used to sell our food online through social media. At the time, we were only able to generate a RM2,000 to RM3,000 income per month”, he said.
Amin also added that once he found out about the initiative, he immediately registered and received his vending machine around September last year.
Menu changes according to students’ liking!
Sharing their strategy, the couple would offer a variety of options for the students to choose. Based on their observation, Amin and Yufaeza found out that the students in the campus prefer food like, Nasi Lemak, Korean fried chicken, cheese fried chicken, chicken chop, spaghetti, snacks, tortilla and sandwiches.
“Other than offering those food options, we would also switch up menu regularly, to ensure that we are always up to trend”, said the couple.
Emphasizing on the freshness of the food, Amin shares that he and his wife would buy fresh ingredients and prepare the food, restocking the machine at 2pm and 10pm. When asked about competition, Amin shared that while their menu changes, they’re adamant on not selling the same food as other vendors in school.
“I don’t want to compete with the vendors. The food we serve in the vending machine is available after the cafeteria closes, for the convenience of the students”, he mentioned.
Using technology to the best of their abilities
To inform students about the variety of food available in their vending machine, they would often share their menu onto the UiTM telegram group. Fortunately, with the support of the students, Amin and Yufaeza are able to sell about 5,000 packs of food, with prices ranging from RM1- RM8.
Conveying his appreciation and gratitude towards the Ministry of Economy, he shared that since the roll out of the initiative, he is able to feel a sense of relief as he is no longer burdened by the uncertainty of generating income. Having 2 children under their roof, Amin and Yufaeza are thankful for the opportunity presented.
Launched by the minister of Economy, Rafizi Ramli, the IPR initiative aims to aid the B40 community, helping them generate sustainable income.
