Loan sharks in Malaysia have accrued a rather fearsome and unsavoury reputation among locals for their questionable business methods and intimidation tactics when it comes down to chasing after their debtors for unpaid dues.

Unfortunately, this often lands other innocent parties into trouble as well, such as in the case of one Johor family who had their home petrol-bombed in a case of mistaken identity by loan sharks

Surprisingly however, another similar incident that occurred in Petaling Jaya yielded a far more diplomatic response after the misunderstanding had been cleared up. As reported by local newspaper Sin Chew Daily, a local man living in SS24 found himself becoming the target of harassment from a group of loan sharks.

Thinking that his home belonged to one of their debtors, known only by the surname of ‘Ho’, they started attaching notices to the front of the victim’s home, hoping to ‘remind’ the debtor to pay off his arrears when he failed to do so.

As many as 6 men riding 3 separate motorbikes have pulled up to the victim’s home and showed him and his family photos as well as other paperwork associated with the debtor in question. The victim and his family promptly told them that they simply had no idea who the debtor was.

Eventually extended an apology for causing them distress

Repeated cases of harassment eventually led the family to lodge a report to Selangor DAP’s Youth division for help, and a press conference was promptly held on Tuesday (January 3rd, 2023) on the matter.

Thankfully, it appears that the loan sharks have finally come to the fact that they have indeed been harassing the wrong person, as they eventually extended a rather polite apology to the victim and his family for causing them anxiety.
