Daughter to incumbent Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and incumbent PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah announced yesterday (February 12th, 2022) that she has stepped-down from her former role as senior advisor of economics and finance attached to the Ministry of Finance.
Nurul Izzah steps down from senior advisor position
As reported by local news outlet Free Malaysia Today, she will take up the position of co-chair as part of a secretariat formed by the advisory panel for the Ministry of Finance instead.
“Hassan Marican [the advisory committee’s chairman] has invited me to join the advisory committee’s secretariat to help in their effort to strengthen the country’s and the rakyat’s economy,”
“I humbly accept this responsibility. Through this new role, I will no longer serve as senior economic and financial advisor to the Prime Minister,” she said in a statement that was released on the matter.
Nurul adds that she is looking forward to helping out Hassan in whatever capacity she is able and serve the needs and interests of the people. The former Minister of Parliament to Permatang Pauh also expressed her gratitude for the support shown towards her by both members within civil service as well as the public.
She will head the committee jointly with PETRONAS senior manager Khairil Anuar Ramli.
Committee to look into matters under Finance Ministry portfolio
The special advisory committee was introduced by Anwar last week and consists of former Petronas chief executive Hassan, FPO Ventures chairman Datuk Ahmad Fuad Md Ali, Sunway University economics studies director Professor Dr Yeah Kim Leng, Universiti Malaya rrofessor of economics Datuk Rajah Rasiah, as well as Sarawak Energy chairman Datuk Amar Abdul Hamed Sepawi.
Reporting directly to the Finance Minister, the committee is tasked to look into matters regarding subsidies that also includes reviewing and restructuring current subsidies, matters pertinent to Government-Linked Companies (GLCs) such as their relevance in the present and the need for consolidation when required, as well as matters regarding national debt and good governance.
Earlier on, Nurul’s appointment as senior advisor of economics and finance under her father on January 3rd had attracted heated criticisms concerning a perceived act of nepotism. Nepotism is explained as a practice of favoritism exercised by those of power to close family members, friends, or known associates.
In response to the claims, Anwar stressed that his daughter was only appointed to the sole owing to her expertise, and assured that she will not be compensated for the role or abuse her position.
