There’s a saying in Mandarin 活到老学到老, which means that humans are born to learn throughout life. In the case of two Malaysian uncles, they have made it a point to prove that learning indeed never stops and you’re never too old to do things you want to do.

Malaysian uncles sit for exam papers to pursue a law degree last Friday

As reported by local newspaper Sinar Harian, both men who are aged 77 and 56 respectively have managed to sit for their end-of-semester examination papers at the University Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA). While most of their friends of a similar age are enjoying their time with their grandchildren, they decided to pursue their academics and complete their studies to obtain a certificate for themselves. Both men enrolled for a Bachelors Degree in Law in October of last year.

According to 56-year-old R. Ramesh, he admitted that he felt the pressure as he enrolled into the course as he would have to divide his time between work, studies and his family. Thankfully with the support of his family, he was able to complete his examinations successfully just a few days ago.

“It has been 37 years since I last sat for an exam paper in 1986 for my STPM certificate, but I was able to answer the questions without feeling too nervous”, he said.

Ramesh, who is also a father of 3, also shared that he had a tough time trying to get used to the life of a student but he is thankful that all his classmates are friendly and were willing to help him out whenever he encountered any problems during his studies.

On the other hand, 77-year-old M. Krishnan also sat for the very same examination on the same day as Ramesh. Similarly, he shared that the biggest challenge he experienced was learning how to divide his time between his studies, while also juggling his work and family life.

At the time, both men were sitting for their Introduction to Information Technology examination.

It’s definitely refreshing and heartwarming to see how they’re willing to step out of their comfort zone and achieve things they want in life. Just remember that you’re never too old to start something!
