M’sian orders her meal in fluent Tamil at a Nasi Kandar restaurant, says she’s been practicing for over 2 years

Malaysia’s cultural heritage is a blend of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and indigenous influences. With that said, most Malaysians living in the country are often multi-lingual. Just recently, a Malaysian woman has surprised many by speaking fluent Tamil when ordering for her meal.

Acording to a video on TikTok, Lyna shared a video of her mother speaking fluent Tamil at a Nasi Kandar restaurant. In her captions, she mentioned that her dad has been rewatching the video multiple times, stating that he is proud of her mom. Speaking to Wau Post, Lyna shared that her paternal grandparents are actually from India.

“When my grandmother stayed with us, my mother realised that she had trouble communicating with them”, she mentioned.

Taking up the challenge, Lyna’s mother then began learning Tamil from Lyna’s grandmother, slowly perfecting her pronunciation and understanding towards the language. Hailing from Ipoh, Lyna added that their family operates a goldsmith shop and being located in Little India, the opportunities for Lyna’s mother to practice her Tamil increases.

When asked how long it took for her mother to fine tune her Tamil linguistic skills, Lyna mentioned that her mother has been practicing for over 2 years.

“She can now converse in fluent Tamil and even speak to her customers using Tamil”, she added.
