For many Malaysians who have grown up in the comfortable familiarity of local culture, hanging out at the local neighbourhood mamak restaurant is simply part and parcel of life. Offering decent meals for not much money, it has become an ingrained part of Malaysian life to not just have a mamak of choice, but as well as your own mamak order that you’ll know by heart.
Malaysian family surprises their favourite mamak waiter with birthday cake
So much so in fact that one local family even decided to take it upon themselves to bring some cheer to their local mamak with a heartwarming surprise.
As shared by local netizen Amelia (@nasikerabu77), she explains that they had brought a birthday cake along with them during one of their regular visits to help celebrate their favourite waiter, Sankar’s, belated 29th birthday before he returned to his home country.
Seated at their table, they then revealed the intricately designed birthday cake as he was taking down their order, much to his surprise and delight. They then went about singing him the ‘Happy Birthday’ medley as he looked on with a bright grin, clearly delighted by the endearing gesture.
A frequent customer of over three years
In speaking with WauPost concerning the happy occassion, Amelia revealed that the idea to surprise Sankar had originally come from her mother, and that they knew about his birthdate after asking him about it a few months prior.
Having dined at the mamak for around three years if not more, she said that her family would have their dinner there at least three times a week and would be served by Sankar as he worked night shifts.
“We’re regular customers and we always seat at the section that he was in charge of. So he has been taking our orders for awhile now.” she said.
The video has since gone viral with 246,500 views as of writing.
Many netizens have since chimed in by saying how the clip had tugged at their heartstrings, and commended the family for their kindness and generosity.
