Despite the fact that they may face some truly staggering challenges in doing day-to-day tasks and are confronted with the stigma that comes with their condition, many of those who are disabled want nothing more but to be able to lead normal lives of their own and support themselves as best they can. And as such, they are no less deserving of respect or dignity as any other able-bodied person.
Former para-athlete born without arms runs kuih stall to earn a living
And in the case of former para-athlete and TikTok user @muhdhijjaz1, otherwise known as Hijjaz, he did not let his own disabilities keep him from making a living just like his peers can. Setting up a stall that offers traditional Malay peneram, he is both the chef and proprietor of this small, home-grown business.
In a video that was filmed and shared to his TikTok account, Hijjaz could be seen expertly frying the dough pastries into a crisp golden brown with a long stick balanced by the stumps of his arms, before tossing them into a serving basket to be sold once they have cooked thoroughly.
The clip came about in response to a netizen who had been curious to know how he supported himself in light of his physical disabilities.
“No dark jokes here. This is just reality.
I still insist on working, despite the physical shortcomings I face.” he said.
Speaking with local news portal WeirdKaya, Hijjaz explained that he had been born without arms and had in fact a para-athlete and was crowned champion of SUKMA Perak in 2018 before starting a business of his own.
Netizens show their support in droves
His story, which has since gone viral across local social media, has led to many netizens expressing their well wishes for Hijjaz and his venture, as well as praise for his grit and determination to earn a living despite his circumstances.
“You have such a determination to find a Halal source of income.”
“May Allah SWT ease all of your ventures.”
“May you be blessed with a long life, and always be rewarded with good health and good fortune.”
“Alhamdulillah, despite all the shortcomings he faces, he still works hard to earn a Halal source of income.”
