As the cost-of-living rises, it’s normal for the public to start looking for cheaper alternatives when it comes to dining out. With that said, this Sabah economy rice seller decides to sell his food for as low as RM2.50, in hopes that he is able to help alleviate some burden.

Just recently, local newspaper Sin Chew Daily has shared a story about a vendor in Sabah named Liu Jin Hua (transliterated). It was said that throughout the years of him selling mixed rice, he has always kept the price at the lower end, so that those with bigger families can afford to feed themselves properly.

Following his story, his low price point has attracted plenty of customers to patron his stall, causing a queue especially during lunch hour. Other than that, the man also sells other items like pastries and bread at an affordable price point, gaining him popularity.

“The price of vegetables have increased but thankfully, the price of meat like pork has decreased by RM10 per kg”, he said, emphasising that the decrease in raw materials as such helped alleviate his burden.

“It’s more important to ensure that people are well-fed”

When asked as to why he didn’t increase his price point, he shared that he wanted his meals to be the ‘true economy rice’. Having children himself, he would often tell his children that it’s important to ensure that the people around us are well-fed. While earning a profit is great, Liu stands by his principles in ensuring that he is able to give back to the society.

“As long as my business can sustain, I will strive to ensure that the customers that come to me are well-fed”, he said.

With that said, Liu offers a plate of economy rice with two different types of vegetables for as low as RM2.50 and if they’d prefer to have a type of protein and vegetable, it’ll be RM4. Following his initiatives, many customers have always showed him support by patronising his store, leaving him happy to see returning customers.
