As the saying goes, desperate times call for desperate measures, this unemployed Malaysian has fallen into the depths of despair and could only resort to stealing from a mosque’s donation box in order to buy milk formula.
M’sian businessman pays legal cost for man who stole RM22 from a mosque donation box to buy milk formula
Over three months ago, an unemployed man pleaded guilty for stealing RM22 from a mosque’s donation box received an unexpected news where a businessman has decided to offer help by bearing his legal costs. According to local newspaper Kosmo!, the man was reprimanded at a supermarket in Kuala Nerus, Terengganu, on July 3 after stealing RM22 on June 27 at around 9:15pm.
Following the news, businessman, Dato Seri Sunny Ung shared that the reason he decided to help him was because he believed that the offender deserves proper legal defense.
“I was told that he wasn’t represented by any lawyers”, he said.
The businessman told the Malay daily that he understood that the accused stole the money because he needed to buy baby formula and other necessities. With that said, he then decided to help the man by bearing the legal cost for him. In addition to that, Dato Sunny has also found a law firm Ahmad Deniel Ruben & Co to help should he decide to accept.
As of now, the man who pleaded guilty to the charge framed under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which includes an imprisonment term of 10 years and a fine once convicted. Magistrate Noor Mazrinie Mahmood subsequently fixed a setencing date which falls on September 26.
