There is an old adage that surely many of us have heard at some point in our lives: a little kindness goes a long way. And nowhere has this been proven to be more true than in a recent experience that was shared by local netizen Ramzi Vishes, who took to his Facebook to recount how he had stumbled upon a 19–year-old university student while on his way back from work.

Despite meeting him in the dark of night, Ramzi decided to stop by the road shoulder and ask where the young man was headed. As it turns out, the young man had been trying to reach the toll plaza near the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, before hopefully finding a lorry that would be kind enough to allow him to hitchhike back to his home state of Johor.

A native of Rengit, the student who is currently attached to a university in Putrajaya, was apparently on his semester break and wanted to head home to work during his time off. At the time Ramzi had met him, he had only just completed his prayers and was about to walk to the toll plaza in spite of the considerable distance as he had run out of money.

He even showed Ramzi his empty wallet, which only contained his IC and some scraps of paper. As his parents were not well to do, the young man refused to further burden them by asking for more money for bus fares. Before their chance encounter, the young man had tried to flag down two to three lorries to no avail. And with a broken phone in hand, he had no way of requesting help.

“While speaking to him the entire time, I noticed that he was holding on to his stomach as though he was hungry.” Ramzi said.

Empathising with his plight, he eventually handed the young man a small amount of money to help him afford a hot meal and a bus ticket back home before sending him on his way. Adding to that, he urges more Malaysians to consider extending their own generosity to those in need, and hopes that the young man would receive assistance back in Johor.
