Caring for our parents especially when they’re ill is definitely something we should do as they’ve taken care of us when as we were growing up. With that said, a Malaysian man has recently shared his daily routine caring for his bedridden mother.

“It’s for the best”, M’sian resigns from his full-time job to help take care of mother who is bedridden

According to his video, he shares that every morning, he would start the day by letting some sunlight in and prepare breakfast along with any necessary medications his mother would have to take. After that, he would proceed to give her a towel bath and change her diapers before cleaning her tracheostomy.

Then, he would proceed to get the laundry done, not forgetting to help his mother change positions in bed so she doesn’t feel extreme discomfort. Following that, he would clean the room by giving it a quick mop, changing the rubbish bag and watering the plants. After making sure that his mother is well fed and comfortable with her favourite TV show, he would quickly make lunch for himself, before giving her physiotherapy.

Speaking to Wau Post, Alif shared that his mother is currently suffering from hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy as a result of not having enough oxygen back in 2022. Prior to quitting his full-time corporate communications job of 8 years, he shared that his family has decided to hire a private nurse to help take care of their mother.

“I realised that my mother looks healthier and happier when I’m taking care of her”, he said, making the decision to quit his job and care for mother full time.

It’s a learning process, you have to start somewhere

When asked where he learned the necessary skills to care for his mother, he shared that while his mother was hospitalised, he was very attentive every time the nurses were at work. He would observe how things are done and do additional research if required to ensure that he is giving his mother the best care.

In terms of his routine, he shared that it took a couple of trial and errors before perfecting it.

“I prepare a checklist for myself every day and make sure that I complete all of it”, he said.

He shared that while it took some time to perfect a routine, he is happy that he has found one that works well for him and his mother. Concluding the interview, Alif shared that it is definitely okay to feel frustrated or tired when being a caretaker as we’re all humans. He added on saying that in his videos he may seem optimistic and happy all the time but in real life, there will be days where he is worried or stressed out while being a caretaker for his mother.

“No matter what happens, I think it’s important to find time for yourself, even if it isn’t long. Allow yourself to destress before moving on to the next task”, he said.

He then ended the interview saying that being a caretaker for a family member shouldn’t be done for the sake of doing it. It should be carried out with love and the thought of wanting to spend time with them.

All the best in your journey Alif, stay strong and continue to be the best you can be.
