“I want to help people,” Kedah woman sells kuih at just 10 sen/piece, hasn’t changed prices in 20 years!

Over the course of the past few years, it has become increasingly difficult to enjoy a decently filling meal on a budget. And much of that can be attributed to the exponentially increasing cost of living in the country, further compounded by an economy that has yet to recover post-Covid.

But yet, some eateries have continued to try their best to offer Malaysians the most bang for their buck where food is concerned by willingly making smaller profits, in order to pass on further savings to their customers through lower prices.

One such eatery can be found in Felda Lubuk Merbau, Kedah, operated by 54-year-old Roslina Saad and her husband, 55-year-old Zulkifli Abdul Razak. From behind an assortment of different plastic containers, their stall, Gerai Cucoq Sekupang, sells a large variety of popular snacks and sweet treats known locally as kuih, which include the likes of curry puffs, ketayap, lopes and buah Melaka.

According to local newspaper Kosmo! it was reported that she sells over 15 different varieties of kuih. But what makes her business truly remarkable is the fact that she sells them at the lowly price of only 10 sen per piece, which means that you could buy a total of 10 pieces with just RM1!

Operating for over 20 years, she claims that her prices have remained the same since the day she started her business in spite of the fact that her operating costs have increased over time, especially with raw ingredients.

A business and an act of charity

According to Roslina, the reason why she continues to try and keep her prices low is so that more of the underprivileged may still be able to afford to eat, even with just a single Ringgit.

“Many may think that you won’t be able to earn money from this but actually, it’s not as bad as people think. We can still sustain despite the price and most importantly, people are still able to enjoy these delicacies in an affordable price”, she said.

She elaborated further saying that they’re able to sustain their business model and even managed to hire a helper to help them with selling their kuihs. What’s more, she also considers her business as a form of charity while acting as her own livelihood, which Rosalina considers to be a win-win situation for both herself and her customer.

But if you’re intent on buying from her stall, be warned that her kuihs are incredibly popular among locals! In fact, Mrs. Roslina reveals that her kuihs would usually sell out in 2 hours’ time and they would prepare about 5,000 pieces of kuih daily!
