“I should go to Kuantan” Japanese anime ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’ gives a special shoutout to M’sian destination

Any anime fan would be familiar with the show ‘Jujutsu Kaisen’, a popular series on mystical sorcery. Now, the series has given Malaysian fans more reasons to love it, thanks to a special mention in one of its latest episodes!

The episode marked a heartbreaking exit for one of the fan favorite characters, Nanami Kento. On the 24th November 2023, the scene aired during episode 42 of the series.

Nanami Kento, a Grade 1 Jujutsu Sorcerer is seen emerging at Shibuya Station after a lengthy battle. In the X clip posted by @hikaeryn, the character appears tired and weary from his injuries.

“Malaysia. That’s right. Malaysia. I should go to Kuantan,” Nanami says, expressing his desire to retire there. Then, the character further adds his wish to live on the beach and make up for lost time. “I already have a mountain of books that I’ve bought and never touched. I’ll read through them page by page,” he muses.

Not long after, Nanami soon faces his tragic end, leading fans to mourn his loss. Many netizens were surprised by this unexpected mention, let alone in a universally acclaimed anime series. This led to hints that someone in the anime production had been to Kuantan before.

Speaking to Wau Post, the poster clarified that the manga artists had indeed visited the town. “The authors mentioned that they had fallen in love with Kuantan while vacationing there,” she told Wau Post.

With the nod towards our home country, Malaysians were moved by the character’s death all the more. Someone had even dedicated a  fictional memorial shrine for Nanami, in none other than Kuantan!

Despite the difficult farewell, fans were honored that Nanami could bid his final goodbye with Malaysia in mind. We certainly hope his memory forever remains in the hearts of many, just like our love for our country!
