A fatal car crash that happened 8 years ago have changed the fate of this man, leaving him bedridden for the rest of his life. And to many, this devastating news may send them into a deep plunge of despair, but for Mohamad Zulkarnain Mustafa, he has decided to not let it affect him completely.
Bedridden M’sian man fixes motorcycle parts in bed to earn extra income
According to local newspaper Harian Metro, it was reported that Mohamad Zulkarnian had encountered a fatal accident when he was on the way home after working at a night market. Unfortunately, the car crash has left him bedridden, changing his course of life.
Prior to this, he would always work at the night market as a fried chicken seller and would occasionally fix motorcycle parts at his own home, as an attempt to help cover his family expenses. Following his journey, after resting for a good year since his accident, he has decided to pick up his passion again, fixing motorcycle parts, as an attempt to earn extra income.
“As I’m unable to walk, my brother would help dismantle the pieces from the bike and bring it to me so I could fix them. After I’m done fixing, he would help me assemble the parts back onto the bike”, he said.
He mentioned that once his brother has dismantled the parts of the bike, he would briefly wash the parts before bringing it to his bed.
“This is where I sleep, so I would have to try my best to keep it as clean as possible”, he shared.
He added on saying that there are plenty of things he needs his brother’s help for, and he would often joke with his brother calling him his colleague. He then revealed that for parts of the motorcycle that can’t be dismantled, he will slightly tilt his body but as his movements are limited, there are certain parts that he can’t access.
“Sticks and bones may break my bones, but I will not give up.”
“I can’t sit for long periods of time and if I were to sit on a wheelchair for more than 2 hours, I will have other health issues like gastric or indigestion”, he mentioned, further explaining that his family would push his bed outside of the house so he can fix the motorcycle while being in bed.
He revealed that he feels much more comfortable when lying in bed and his tasks appear to be more difficult if he sits on a wheelchair. Regardless of his shortcomings, Zulkarnian is determined to become a mechanic as he realises that this is his true passion and doesn’t want his techniques and skills to go to waste.
“I want to be as independent as possible; I don’t want to be idle all day”, he said, emphasising that being able to do what he enjoys is good for his health and mental wellbeing.
However, he mentioned that due to his conditions, he would take a longer time to complete the tasks but thankfully, his customers are very understanding of the situation. He also revealed that he would only receive about 1 or 2 motorcycles every month, as they live in a kampung where other mechanics are present.
Lastly, he shared that he is very thankful for his friends and neighbours who are willing to send their motorcycles over for him to repair.
“I’m grateful for them to put trust in me, and I hope that with the help of my parents I will be more well-equipped with tools in the future”, he said.
Keep up the good work Zulkarnian, your fighter spirit deserves recognition!
