For those who are unfamiliar, tactile pavement, also known as tactile paving or tactile warning surface, refers to a specific type of pavement or ground surface that is designed to provide tactile and visual cues to assist people with visual impairments or those who have difficulty with mobility or orientation. It is primarily used to enhance accessibility and safety in urban environments.

Just recently, a Malaysian couple has shared a video onto their TikTok, tugging on the heartstrings of netizens. In the 27-second video, it was seen that a man was arranging the motorcycles onto the side of the pavement. Upon watching the video, it was revealed that the man was actually visually impaired and the motorcycles he was arranging were blocking the tactile pavement.

Pn. Nadia, who was recording the video, said that the man is her husband and she was picking her husband Mr. Rangga from the MRT station. Pn. Nadia shared her feelings, saying that she felt sad seeing that her husband had to move the motorcycle away from the pavement and was touched by his husband’s determination.

“I want to share this because I want more people to be aware of the usage of the tactile pavement”, she said.

Following that, Pn. Nadia has urged the public to avoid parking their motorcycles on the tactile pavement so that those who have difficulty with mobility or are visually impaired can get to their destinations safely.

“Honestly, there are plenty of people out there who doesn’t know the function of tactile pavements. I didn’t know the function until I asked my friends who worked in the road construction sector. I think there should be some sort of explanation to the public.”
