In less than a period of two weeks, Malaysians will be turning out in droves at their local constituencies to let their voices be heard and cast their ballots for the 15th General Elections. As one can expect, local politicians from their respective parties have been spotted working hard on the ground on the campaign trail in a bid to shore up support ahead of polling day.
MCA candidate grilled by local auntie on livestream
And things were no different for Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) candidate Daniel Ling Sia Chi, who was recently seen speaking to members of the public video in the Segambut district. Only in this case, he was left red-faced after being confronted by a local woman concerning the state of corruption that has beset the country.
Introducing herself as ‘Karen’, the bespectacled lady could be heard urging Malaysians to carry out their civic responsibilities and make a point to vote during the General Elections. Airing her dissatisfaction with the present state of the country, and emphasised that voting is essential to secure the future of generations to come.
“We must drain the swamp, and any corruption must be gone.” she said.
Daniel could be heard agreeing to her sentiments, and adds that with a stable government, the country could lure in more foreign investment and create new jobs thus securing prosperity for the country. To which Karen responded by saying that it all sounds well and good, before proceeding to question him about what his coalition, Barisan Nasional (BN), has done for the people.
“This all sounds very good, but you ask BN, what have you all done for Malaysia for the past 50-odd years. We have lost a lot of money,”
Life-lessons in two parts
Appearing slightly taken aback, Daniel stresses that the power is in the hands of the people, and said that while he cannot promise ‘the sky, the moon’, he will endeavour to serve the people to the best of his abilities. He then goes on to share an anecdote about how his mother taught him never to make promises one cannot keep, lest they lose their reputation and good name when the promises are broken.
Karen countered this by saying that her own mother had also taught her not to steal from others.
“At the end of the day, my parents also taught me, ‘Don’t steal money!’. You cannot snatch, you cannot steal money that belongs to others.”
At this point, the MCA candidate could be seen muttering an apology before attempting to turn the camera away from her.
“When I talk about corruption, you want to go away!” she savagely remarks.
Daniel is currently contesting in the Segambut district against Pakatan Harapan juggernaut Hannah Yeoh. A video of the fiery exchange was shared by Twitter user @KlutzyKucing, where it has since gone viral across social media.
Netizens show their support for auntie Karen’s blunt honesty
Many have rallied behind the auntie, commending her for her courage in speaking her mind and telling it like it is.
“He thinks bringing up his mother is going to keep the woman quiet, she gave him time to sell his BS then hit him back right and proper. Enough, say no to UMNO, no to BN. No more BS, no more BN.”
“I respect that sister! She can be a debater.”
“Hahaha, steady auntie. ‘When I talk about corruption, you wanna run away…’ hahahaha”
“Hahaha, when you talk about corruption, they start squirming like pigs to the slaughter. BN and corruption are forever intertwined.”
