18yo Johor lion dancer injures right eye, becomes partially blind after firework explodes as he was lighting it up

Chinese New Year is an occasion celebrated by many Malaysians and lion dances are often hired to perform to usher in good luck. Tragically as local newspaper Sin Chew Daily reports, that was not the case for an 18-year-old lion dancer who wound up sustaining life-altering injuries during his performance.

18-year-old lion dancer becomes partially blind after fireworks explode

On the day of the incident, the lion dance trope that the teenager had arrived at a home for their last performance of the day at around 1.00am. As part of their performance, he was tasked to help set off the fireworks.

But as he got close and was lighting the fireworks up, the firework exploded and caused him to fall to the ground. Given his injuries, he was immediately rushed to a hospital at Tangkak. His sister was informed of the incident and followed suit to the hospital to check up on his condition.

The teen reassured his sister that he was doing fine and comforted her sister instead. His sister has revealed that the injuries he sustained required stitches and because his right eye was severely damaged, doctors have mentioned that he will become partially blind as a consequence.

Following that, he was transferred to a hospital in Muar and doctors have told them that he would undergo eye surgery. In the worst case scenario, they warned that they may have to remove his right eye and replace it with an artificial prosthetic eyeball.

As they were performing surgery on his right eye, they were somewhat relieved to find out that the teenager could keep his right eye despite his vision being impaired. Currently, the senior high school student is still recovering in the hospital and is expected to be discharged sometime this week if his recovery goes as planned.

While he has partially lost his sight, the teen is remains positive and has been reassuring his family that he still has his left eye.

 “It’s okay that I lost my right eye, at least I can still see all of you with my left eye”, he said to his family.

As of now, his sister has shared that they aren’t sure why her brother was in charge of lighting up the fireworks and her husband has approached the seller to understand why the fireworks would explode. According to the seller, the firework may have exploded due to it being dropped prior to being lit up.
