As the world was put onto a halt during the pandemic, humans were forced to find alternatives in order to keep the ball rolling and one of the greatest inventions would be robotic waiters. As plenty of restaurants would require waiters to help carry food from the kitchen to the guests, ‘robotic waiters’ have been created to help with the lack of manpower.
Local restaurant managing director shares that robotic waiters are no longer necessary
While the robotic waiters are a good invention to help with the lack of manpower, as foreign workers are coming back in to fill up vacancies, these robotic helpers are going out of jobs! According to local newspaper The Star‘s interview with Original Penang Kayu Nasi Kandar’s managing director, Burhan Mohamed, he said that the restaurant has acquired 20 robotic waiters during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“These robots take longer time to deliver the food and at some premises the usage of the robots may not be as efficient due to space limitations”, he said.
He added on that patrons who frequent the restaurant would much rather prefer human waiters as human waiters are significantly more effective than robotic helpers. When asked about the issue pertaining to the lack of manpower, Burham revealed that his restaurant has hit an optimum level where he has enough employees to run the restaurant.
In a separate statement made by Govindasamy Jayabalan, the president of Malaysian Indian Restaurant Owners Association (Primas), he said that business recovery and the lack of manpower situation has been improving well over the past year. However, he emphasised that the lack of manpower in certain grouping restaurants are still facing a 30% shortage.
