The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) are now opening an investigation into claims that footage of Malaysian women changing in popular clothing retailer H&M’s fitting rooms are being sold online. The allegations first surfaced when netizen @meleisgw broke the news over her Twitter profile, explaining that the videos were being sold to unscrupulous parties online.
Footage of M’sian shoppers in changing rooms allegedly sold online
Accompanying her post were a number of screenshots, all of which appear to be taken from a top-down perspective using a hidden camera without the shopper’s knowledge. Five victims could be seen in the process of disrobing in the fitting rooms. Sellers peddling the footage claim that they have clips of not just individuals, but couples in the fitting rooms as well.
Prior to the Twitter thread being deleted for the sake of protecting the privacy of the affected individuals, some victims have since come forward to speak about the matter with the Twitter user. Among them include one woman who identified herself as one of the persons who was filmed on camera, and alleged that the incident had taken place in the fitting room of H&M’s Avenue K outlet.
“May I know all those videos are taken from where? Cause one of the persons in that video is me, and it caused me embarrassment when it was published publicly. I hope that you can help me.
The fitting room is at H&M Avenue K if I am not mistaken, cause I bought a shirt from there. The videos might have been recorded on October 6th 2022.” the victim said.
H&M Malaysia issues statement, lodges police report
Since the incident was made public, H&M Malaysia explains that they have since lodged a police report in a statement made out to LifestyleTech, reports The Star.
“The safety of our customers is of the utmost importance to us. A police report has been made and investigations are currently ongoing.
We have conducted an inspection of all fitting rooms and are working to ensure that there are no security breaches that will compromise the privacy of our customers,” it read.
Local police have also issued a statement on the matter, with Dang Wangi OCPD Asst Comm Noor Dellhan Yahaya confirming that they received a police report dated January 9th, 2023 (Monday). It was said that the report was made by a security manager from a Jalan Imbi outlet.
However upon inspecting the changing rooms, the authorities were not able to locate the hidden camera and believe that the footage could have been filmed elsewhere. The case will be investigated under Section 509 of the Penal Code for insulting the modesty of a person.
