UTeM introduces SMART hydrobike that helps clean the Melaka River

The Melaka River, also known as Sungai Melaka, is a river that flows through the historic city of Melaka (Malacca) in Malaysia. One of the popular activities for tourists is taking a river cruise along the Melaka River. The cruise provides visitors with a scenic view of the historical sites, buildings, and cultural landmarks along the riverbanks. Just recently, a SMART hydrobike has been introduced, to help clean the Melaka River!

UTeM introduces SMART hydrobike that helps clean the Melaka River

In hopes of preserving and maintaining the clealiness of the Melaka River, Melaka TV shared that UTeM has come up with a new initiative. Introducing the new SMART hydrobike, the bike is made for pedaling around the river, all the while collecting any debris or rubbish in the river.

Following the initiative, Datuk Fairul Nizam Roslan, The State Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communication Exco shared that this initiative not only benefits by cleaning up the garbage, but it also creates an environment where it encourages people to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

When asked about how the bike works, it was reported that a net has been attached onto the bike, allowing it to collect any rubbish that is within the pedaling vicinity.

“About 10 bikes are now available and we intend on increasing the number of bikes along the way”, he said.

Other than that, Datuk Fairul Nizam also shared the introduction of these bikes would give visitors another activity to choose from, as opposed to just a river cruise.
