TV3 censors bodies of Halle Berry & Jessica Chastain as they presented Michelle Yeoh’s Oscar award

On Monday, Michelle Yeoh has once again created history by winning the highly coveted Best Actress award at the Oscar’s. But beyond that, she will also carry the title of being the very first Asian actress to win the title in the award’s 95-year history, putting not just Malaysia, but Asians on the global entertainment map.

Following her achievement, numerous media outlets have broadcasted her success across the globe, including our very own TV3.

TV3 censors outfits worn by Jessica Chastain and Halle Berry at the Oscars 

Only in their case, it would appear that the choice of attire worn by actresses Halle Berry and Jessica Chastain may have proved too racy for the local broadcaster. In a 1-minute-29-second video posted on Bulletin TV3 socials, an excerpt was taken from an earlier broadcast which saw local newscasters reporting on Michelle’s win and congratulating her on the moment.

As part of their segment, they also showed the exact moment when Michelle was announced as the winner during the award’s show, but with one change.

It appears that TV3 has blurred out the dresses the two presenters were wearing as they were announcing the historic moment, leaving only their faces visible. At the time, Jessica was wearing a gown designed by Gucci, while Halle Berry was dressed in a white number by designer Tamara Ralph.

A screenshot of the video was uploaded onto Reddit and later on to Twitter, sparking a heated debate and discussion on the comment sections. Many netizens have been left surprised and exasperated by the station’s decision to censor the actresses, as it was said that neither woman wearing any explicitly revealing attire.

A netizen has commented saying how the decision to censor the bodies of both women only made them appear to be even more inappropriate.

Another netizen commented on how Yeoh’s success can never be achieved in the Malaysia film environment, due to the country’s more conservative values.

One joked and asked if it was really a censorship issue, or poor video resolution.

Others stood by the actresses and pointed out that there wasn’t an issue with their choice of outfit for the evening.

However, some netizens have also chose to defend the TV channel and emphased that there are rules and regulations that they have to abide by, as the content was viewed by audiences of all ages.
