This M’sian sold off his motorbike so he could catch the Harimau Malaya team play at Qatar!

The AFC Cup, organized by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), is an annual international club football competition in Asia. The tournament was first held in 2004 and involves clubs from diverse football associations across Asia. After over 4 decades, Malaysia has finally qualified with merit, and their match with South Korea yesterday was definitely one of the matches that will be remembered for years to come.

Watching the game, the Harimau Malaya fans at Al Janoub Stadium in Al Wakrah, Qatar, erupted with excitement when all three goals were scored. The enthusiasm was particularly intense when a 2-1 lead was secured! Unfortunately, the team is confirmed to exit 2023 AFC Asian Cup Finals in Qatar, after losing to Jordan and Bahrain.

Following the match with South Korea, a particular fan of Harimau Malaya has gone viral for his emotional expressions during the match. With his unique hair colour and emotional outbursts during the game, the Malaysian was quickly identified as Derrick. According to a post on Facebook by JDTFC, Derrick is one of Harimau Malaya’s hardcore fans, who made significant sacrifices in order to catch the Asian Cup.

Back in December last year, Derrick had made a post, selling off his motorcycle for RM4,500. In his caption he wrote,

” Raising funds to head to Qatar! Malaysia road to Asia! I’m looking to sell my motorcycle for my beloved country. 1st major tournament in Malaysia history! Is there anyone who is willing to help me? Feel free to let me know.”
