“She wants to leave,” M’sian job scam victims claim to have seen missing Setapak woman in Myanmar

In April of this year, Malaysian headlines were lit up in a frenzy after news spread across social media that 22-year-old insurance saleswoman Chia Min Yong, who was last seen in the Setapak area had suddenly gone missing. Leaving behind only a cryptic text to her boyfriend and mother telling them not to go looking for her, the woman’s whereabouts remain unknown, with many speculating that she may have fallen victim to a job scam.

Almost five months since initial reports of her disappearance broke cover, a pair of Malaysian job scam victim who was managed to get in touch with their family made bombshell claims that they have seen Chia while being held captive in Myanmar.

Missing Setapak saleswoman allegedly sighted in Myanmar

According to local paper Sin Chew Daily, five members of the victims’ family had submitted a memorandum with the Malaysia International Humanitarian Organisation to the Myanmar embassy at around 11.00am yesterday morning (September 14th 2022), urging local authorities there to help rescue the two brothers.

During an interview, a family member known only as Ms Chen claimed that both her sons, aged 16 and 30 respectively, were duped by an employment agency here after they had initially gone to apply for work as chefs on March 21st, 2022 according to Oriental Daily. They were then abducted, before being trafficked into Myanmar.

They would later make contact with their family in April via email, and had informed them of their circumstances.

“My sons said that they often saw Chia Min Yong crying in the dining room over breakfast, and she would often express that she wanted to leave.

Therefore, my sons hope to help save her as well.” she adds.

What exactly happened?

To recap, Chia reportedly disappeared on August 5th, 2022. On the day, she had informed her family that she would be out meeting prospective clients and had taken her mother’s car out. However later in the day, both Chia’s mother and her boyfriend would receive text messages, explaining that she was heading to Johor for a new job.

Explaining that she was deeply unhappy with her current job as an insurance salesperson, she told them not to contact her or go out looking for her, and adds that she was safe.

While Chia claims to have packed her luggage, her family would later discover that she only brought her passport along with her. They also suspected that the message was not written by Chia, but by somebody else.

Since then, multiple attempts have been made in an attempt to locate the missing saleswoman, including a RM110,000 cash reward from Singaporean social media personality Wang Lei, in exchange for her safe return.
