Last December, it was reported that a single mother who had been in Tamarind Square fell victim to an incident of sexual assault, after a man had approached her at the parking lot before molesting her in-front of her own child. According to the victim at the time, the culprit could not be caught as there weren’t any security cameras found in the area.
Another instance of sexual assault reported in Tamarind Square
Fast forward to yesterday (5th April 2022), yet another netizen has recounted a similar experience that had occurred to a friend of hers. Requesting to remain annonymous, the netizen explained that her friend was with another pregnant woman at the time of the incident. Fearing that the man would harm the expectant mother, she decided against fighting back.
The netizen alleges that they later learned just minutes after her friend’s initial assault, another woman had also fallen victim to the man. In speaking with local law enforcement authorities, she claims to have been informed that the management of Tamarind Square had remained silent on the instances of sexual assault occurring in their parking basements.
The assailant was seen with curly hair and was wearing an Adidas outfit with Adidas slippers at the time of the incident, which took place at Basement Level 1, near the entrance of EMart convenience store.
Later on, her friend was told to retract her police report due to insufficient evidence, due to a lack of security cameras at the car-park. However, her friend had decided against withdrawing the report, and is looking into taking action against the management of Tamarind Square over the incident.
The netizen has also advised other single women to be wary of their surroundings, as the assailant appeared to know the area well enough to run and hide.
Police have detained the suspect
Thankfully in the latest update from the case, Malaysiakini reports that the suspect in question has since been detained by the authorities after two confirmed cases of sexual assault were reported in the area by female victims. The first victim, a 27-year-old personal asssistant, had been loading up groceries into her car at the time of the incident, when she was groped at the 3rd floor of Tamarind Square’s parking lot at 2.00pm.
Subsequently, another woman aged 34 who was waiting for an elevator at Level 2 of Block A found herself molested from behind by the suspect. Sepang district police chief Wan Kamarul Azran Wan Yusof said that they have acquired CCTV footage from the premises, and believe that both incidents were committed by the same 20-year-old suspect, who worked as a food delivery rider.
A press conference will be held at a later date with more information on the case.
