The Olympic Games, often referred to as the greatest sporting spectacle is scheduled to take place in Paris this year. Despite the hindrances with Covid-19, the game is said to be back on track with athletes all over the world participating. Just yesterday, Seasia Stats, has shared a rather interesting statistic regarding the greatest number of Olympic qualified athletes across Southeast Asia!
M’sia claims 5th spot for the most Olympic qualified athletes across Southeast Asia
According to the statistics released, Malaysia has been ranked as the 5th country to produce the most amount of Olympic qualified athletes across Southeast Asia. Looking at the list, Thailand, dubbed as the land of smiles topped the charts by churning out 26 athletes that are qualified for the Olympics.
Following closely behind is Singapore, with 10 Olympic qualified athletes, while the 3rd spot was claimed by Indonesia with 9 qualified athletes. Other countries in Southeast Asia, including Philippines has presented 8 qualified athletes while Malaysia and Vietnam are tied at 6 qualified athletes.
As of now, other Southeast Asia countries including Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Timor-Leste have yet to qualify any athletes for the upcoming Paris Olympics. Scheduled to take place in Paris from 26 July to 11 August 2024, countries that have yet to qualify any athletes for the games would have 4 months to prepare.
List of Malaysian athletes qualified for the Paris Olympics 2024
As mentioned, the 6 Malaysian athletes that are qualified for the Paris Olympics are:
- Mohamad Aniq Kasdan (weightlifting)
Mohamad Aniq secured his spot by finishing eighth in the men’s 61-kilogram event at the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Cup in Phuket, Thailand. As of now, the national weightlifter remains eighth on the Olympic qualifying ranking, with a total lift of 296 kg, which is the national record, set during the International Weightlifting Championship in Qatar last December.
- Nur Shazrin Latif (Sailing)
Nur Shazrin is the sole sailor in Malaysia to secure a slot at the Paris Olympics 2024. She has already secured her spot at the games after winning the gold medal in the Sailing Women’s Single-Handed Dinghy ILCA 6 category at the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022.
- Jonathan Wong (Shooting)
Basing on his results, Johnathan secured a fourth-place finish in the Men’s 10 metre (m) Air Pistol event to earn his ticket. According to local newspaper MalayMail, this marks his second appearance in the Olympics following his debut in the Rio 2016 edition.
- Ariana Nur Dania Zairi (Archery)
Hard work indeed paid off for Ariana Nur Dania as she was reported to have qualified for the Paris Olympics 2024 last year. This exciting announcement comes after securing a quota place in the women’s recurve individual event at the 2023 Asian Continental Qualifier Tournament in Bangkok, Thailand.
- Nur Aisyah Mohd Zubir (Cycling)
Cyclist Nur Aisyah Mohd Zubir makes headlines after being the first female cyclist to be qualified for the Paris Olympics 2023. The 26-year-old cyclist secured her spot in the women’s road race through the 2023 Asian Championships in Rayong, Thailand.
- Bertrand Rhodict Lises (Diving)
Local newspaper Malay Mail has revealed that Bertrand Rhodict, is the first Malaysian athlete to qualify for the Olympics. This comes after finishing 10th in the 10m platform at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships.
