It’s safe to say that Malaysia has been whipped up in a frenzy of celebration over a truly monumental moment, when Perak native Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh nabbed arguably the biggest acting accolade within the entertainment industry — Best Actress at the 95th Academy Awards.

It doesn’t just stop there, as asides from being the very first Malaysian to win the award, which is a significant feat in itself, she is also the first woman of Asian descent to be awarded the accolade in the award show’s 95-year run, and the second woman of colour to win it. The first woman of colour to do so was Halle Berry, whom eagle-eyed viewers will no doubt notice was one of the two actresses chosen to present the Oscar to Michelle, the other being Academy-alum Jessica Chastain.

As one can expect, congratulatory praise has erupted across the nation from not just among ordinary Malaysians, but notable figures alike such as local celebrities, as well as the country’s leaders. The same can also be said of local companies, many of which have shown their support for Michelle through prominent billboard displays, such as that of Pavilion Group’s and local biscuit brand Julies.

And in the case of local advertising company ‘Visual Retale’, they have decided to do the same by dedicating some of their digital billboards to Michelle’s win at the Oscars with a rather coy suggestion.

“Forget public holiday! Let’s Make March 13th Michelle Yeoh Day!” their display reads.

The two billboards can be found in Jalan Puchong and Jalan Bangsar respectively, occupying prime advertising real estate.

In speaking with local newspaper Malay Mail, Visual Retale chief executive officer Sailendra Kanagasundram said that the billboards will remain on display for up to a week as a show of his appreciation towards Michelle’s contributions to the country.

“She is inspiring millions of Malaysians including our children that we as Malaysians are capable of competing and winning on an international stage.”

The film Everything Everywhere All At Once by production company A24 has proved to be a triumph along the award show circuit this year. For the Oscars alone, it was nominated in eleven categories and won in seven, including for Best PictureBest DirectorBest Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing.
