New conspiracy theory in Malaysia falsely claims COVID antiviral pills contain mind control microchips

The advent of the Internet is a double-edged sword, a fact that many of us can readily attest to. For without it, we wouldn’t be able to enjoy the convenience that we are all accustomed to, what with such a vast repository of information now completely within our reach by the tap of a finger. But conversely, it is by means of that convenience and ease of access that has led to the proliferation of fake news, especially through social media.

PAXLOVID pills contain mind-control chips?

And while the recent headlines concerning a chain message that erroneously claimed Halal squid rings were in fact made of pig’s intestines still remains fresh in our memory, yet another round of chain messages has since emerged in local WhatsApp circles. This time, instead of squid rings, the messages are now targeting PAXLOVID, a newly launched COVID-19 antiviral pill that is slated to be introduced into Malaysia by this Month.

As shared in a screenshot obtained by Twitter netizen Dr Khairul Hafidz, otherwise known by his Twitter handle @khairul_hafidz, the message instructs Malaysians against consuming the pill if they are ever prescribed it by medical professionals. Apparently, while the pill is meant for the treatment of COVID-19, the message claims that the pill is part of a scheme to control the minds of human beings upon ingestion.

“Please tell everyone not to consume this PAXLOVID antiviral pill. It isn’t used to cure COVID-19, but to control humans as this electronic pill contains a chip that will send off a signal the very moment you consume it,

Once it enters your body, you will forever be controlled, including your mind. Without realising it, you will obey the instructions of the Ministry of Health, who bow down to devil worshippers, and eventually cause your faith to go astray. ” the message reads.

Chain message likely inspired by a separate medical development

For reference, the PAXLOVID pill is manufactured by pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, who is also the company behind one of the leading MRNA vaccines currently used in the fight against COVID-19.

“Do they really think that they are so important that the Ministry of Health wants to use a microchip to control their thoughts?

Where are we going to find the kind of money to hire so many more additional members of staff to sort out all these mind-controlled people?” Dr Hafidz asks in amusement.

However, he does further go on to add that the chain message may have initially been inspired by a separate, unrelated new medical development from the American Food and Drug Administration, which had just granted approval of the use of a pill containing a sensor that can digitally track whether patients have consumed their medication or not. Note, no they don’t control your mind.

Netizens are amused

Tickled by the claims, many netizens have expressed their incredulity over the claims, with many drawing comparisons with the willingness of some conspiracy theorists to consume ivermectin earlier on during the pandemic.

“Pills that are meant for dogs, they will down an entire strip. Pills meant for humans, they’ll say that it contains a chip. Why are they still so obsessed over chips?”

“Chips are expensive to manufacture. It’s a waste of time to implant them into the brains of those who aren’t that bright. Better to implant them into the minds of those who are smart, at least there will be something to analyse.”

“Medicines meant for horses that aren’t supposed to be ingested by humans, they will want to take. But pills that are recommended for consumption, they’ll forbid you from taking. Insane!”

“Astagfirullahailazim. Their imagination goes beyond the comprehensible. They just know everything. If they made a film or a novel, I don’t even know how to categorise the genre.”
