The Paralympics are currently ongoing in Paris, showcasing extraordinary athletes across various sports. With that said, Malaysia’s para-athletes are all suited up, ready to make a name for Malaysia and for themselves. Just yesterday (2 September), Malaysians were thrilled to witness the first ever gold medal won by our very own shuttler, Cheah Liek Hou!
Cheah Liek Hou wins M’sia’s 1st gold medal!
Participating in the men’s singles SU5 (physical impairment), Cheah Liek Hou has successfully defended his gold medal as well as bag Malaysia’s first gold medal! Facing his opponent Suryo Nugroho from Indonesia, the Malaysian shuttler was able to defeat him in 42 minutes, with a score of 21-13, 21-15 at Porte de La Chapelle Arena.
After a tie of 3-3 early in the game, Liek Hou managed to keep his composure, before slowly leading in the game, securing a 17-10 score before winning at 21-13. In his second match, the opponent was seen tailing the world number one closely, with a score of 15-14. However, with Liek Hou’s steadiness, he was able to turn the tables around, winning the match with a 21-15 score.
Standing at the podium, the crowd cheered loudly for the Malaysian shuttler as he was awarded with the gold medal, Looking at the video by Astro Arena (Karlnunis), many in the crowd were seen holding the Jalur Gemilang, waving it proudly. As soon as the medals were distributed, announcement was made, requesting for the crowd to stand for the national anthem of Malaysia.
As the familiar tune plays in the hall, Liek Hou was seen giving a salute to his own national anthem, showcasing his love, respect and dedication he has towards our country.
Liek Hou is a two-time Paralympic gold medalist where he previously won a gold medal in the men’s singles SU5 (physical impairment) event in Tokyo 2020. As of now, the Malaysian shuttler’s focus will be on the Asian Para games in 2026 at Japan.
