Back in August 24, Malaysia made global headlines when one of our former Prime Ministers had been put behind bars in relation to corruption charges. For his involvement with the 1MDB scandal, Najib Razak was slapped with a 12-year jail term along with a RM210 million fine and is currently spending his days in Kajang Prison.

Since his incarceration, his daughter Yana Najib has kept the nation abreast of Najib’s condition from behind bars, from the state of his health to his opinions on the current political landscape during and after the 15th General Elections.

But it would appear that the disgraced Prime Minister isn’t intent on idling away for the next decade either.

Minister of Home Affairs Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution has recently revealed to local newspaper Sin Chew Daily in an interview that Najib is now honing his academic interests and is apparently in the midst of pursuing his Master’s degree from prison

“As long as he adheres to the SOPs set, the authorities will definitely try their best to facilitate his academic needs”, he said.

Of course, Najib wouldn’t be the first inmate to pursue an academic certification from behind bars, as Nasution reveals that many other prisoners have decided to use the time they had in jail to better themselves by completing similar professional accreditations.

However, pursuing a Master’s degree in prison may prove challenging as prisoners are not allowed to use a laptop or the Internet. Saifuddin emphasised that Najib, just like any other prisoners, would still be subject to this rule with no exceptions.

“He only learns about various issues happening around the world through his media team”, he said.

As for Najib maintaining an active presence over social media, Saifuddin highlighted the fact that there is no law that prohibits him to express his opinions online through his media team.

“Technically, there are no legal restrictions in place to stop him from expressing his opinions.

Back then when our current prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was in prison, he was also given the opportunity to attend court hearings and make his own statements”, he mentioned.

As of now, legal proceedings surrounding the 1MDB remain ongoing. In this respect, Najib has managed to gain small victory after he was acquitted of tampering with 1MDB audit records alongside the company’s former CEO, Arul Kanda.
