M’sian UMK graduate sells mee sotong for a living, earns over 6 figures!

Regardless of one’s choice in their occupation or career, they should never be judged as long as they’re trying to live an honest living. Just yesterday (10 December), in an inspiring story, a Malaysian graduate has made headlines for earning over 6 figures by selling mee sotong!

According to local newspaper Sinar Harian, UMK graduate, Syed Muhammad Hafiz Seeni Mohd shared that he has been helping his dad out at his stall since he was 9. At a young age, the graduate understood how hard his father had to work to support their family. Thankfully, he was able to graduate with a Bachelor of Applied Science with honours in the bioindustry.

With the knowledge equipped, Syed Muhammad Hafiz set off to continue his father’s legacy however, as the pandemic hit, it has greatly impacted their business.

“I had the idea of making instant mee sotong and decided to give it a try”, he said.

Pivoting into a more sustainable business model

Using the hard-earned money from carnivals and selling by the road, he was able to pivot his family’s financial status and business model. Instead of continuing his father’s street food legacy, the 23-year-old man decided to use retort technology, which allows his customers to have a taste of his family’s famous mee sotong without having to travel.

While it was an innovative idea, Syed Muhammad Hafiz mentioned that he didn’t expect his idea to receive extraordinary support from the public. Following his journey, he then registered his company under UMKEI, and is currently the founder and CEO of Seeni Food & Beverages Sdn Bhd.

The optimistic 23-year-old founder is aiming to promote his instant mee sotong, hoping that it could be a hit globally, especially in countries like South Korea.
