One thing that we Malaysians can agree on is that eating out has become increasingly expensive over the past number of years, and that’s no thanks to the steadily rising rate of inflation witnessed across the world that is further compounded by supply chain disruptions. And whether if your guilty pleasure is a delectable stick of satay or a dish of char kway teow, one can definitely expect to feel an added pinch in the pocket with menu prices now.

M’sian man’s sister paid RM107 for 30 sticks of Satay and 2 nasi himpit

On Tuesday, Twitter user @adiehussin94 took to sharing some satay and nasi himpit that he was enjoying with his family. In his post, he also shared a picture of the receipt of how much the entire meal had cost them.

In the receipt, it can be seen that the eatery had charged them RM2.90 per stick of chicken satay, RM3.90 per stick of beef satay, and RM2.50 for nasi himpit served with cucumbers and onions. The total came up to RM104.00 for 30 sticks of satay as well as the nasi impit, which took him by surprise. And instead of 2023, the receipt was dated 2024, much to Adie’s amusement.

He then decided to check with other social media users if the price being charged is comparable to other satay vendors.

“I just noticed the receipt is dated for 2024, are they charging me the price they’re setting for 2024?”

Speaking to Wau Post, Adie shared that they don’t have satay often but as it was late in the evening and they were hungry, their family decided to buy some. He only came to learn about the price after his sister had gone out to purchase it from a stall in Cheras and returned home. Prior to this, his family would usually have satay back in Kelantan but since moved over to Shah Alam, they would rarely indulge in the delicacy.

“This is the first time my sister has bought satay from this particular eatery for me and my nephew”, he said.

When his sister brought that satay home, he was surprised to see how much she was charged but emphasised that they didn’t mind as the satay tasted good. But he couldn’t help but wonder if the price was normal and decided to take this to his socials asking for netizens’ opinion.

Following that, his post has garnered plenty of comments from netizens who shared their thoughts on the matter.

A netizen commented saying that it’s quite expensive and asked if the peanut sauce was tasty. She then continued saying that if the peanut sauce wasn’t good it’ll really spoil one’s mood and that you can still purchase RM0.80 for 1 stick of Satay.

He then replied the netizen saying that the Satay was indeed tasty.

“That’s expensive! Was the peanut sauce good with the satay? If it wasn’t good, then that can really affect your mood because being expensive is one thing. If back in Kedah, you can get one stick for just 80 cents.”

“Oh I admit the satay was really good.”

“I think it’s quite expensive but looking at the size of the meat, it does look thicker than the usual RM1.20/RM1.50 price range.”

“For me, I think it’s expensive. The normal price range for a stick of Satay away is about RM1.50 and below. There’s a store that sells satay at the RnR Dengkil and I think it’s quite delicious. It’s cheap and I’ve ordered over 30+ sticks for about RM40+.”
