There has been a long-held belief in the dating world that the man should make a point of holding doors open, pulling out chairs, and paying for the meals. But naturally with times changing, social norms follow suit and in most cases, it’s now becoming increasingly common for couples to either go Dutch, or take turns paying for each date.

However, one man decided to go out on a limb and make an attempt at gallantry with his girlfriend, only to find himself saddled with debt as a consequence.

According to a post that was submitted annonymously to Xuan, the man explains that he started dating about 2 years ago. Apparently, his partner is accustomed to the finer things in life as she comes from a wealthy family background.

As a consequence, she would often insist on going out to expensive cafes or hotpot and barbecue restaurants when they go on dates. And predictably, none of these eateries come cheap.

“The bill would cost me about RM200 per meal and every time there’s public holiday, she would ask for a short staycation”, he said.

Being her boyfriend, he felt bad for asking her to pay half of the expenses, so he took it upon himself to pay for everything. He then revealed that after a year or so, he has racked up a considerable amount of credit card debt. In fact, he is currently only able to afford to make the minimum payments on his credit card, which only worsens his financial situation.

“As I can only minimum payment, the interest has been snowballing and now I have racked up a debt over RM27k”, he said.

He elaborated further saying that he’s been wanting to tell his partner about his current status, but he can’t help but to feel ashamed and embarrassed.

His worries have also begun affecting his health as he has started to lose sleep over his financial difficulties, as well as the anxiety of having his girlfriend learn about his situation.

“I’m afraid that she’ll look down on me and belittle me for being such a failure”, he said.

With no other avenues left to him, the man says he feels trapped in his situation.

His post has since attracted the attention of many netizens, some of whom dispensed advise that would hopefully grant him some much-needed clarity.

“If the two of you have decided to be with each other but can’t support and be considerate towards each other, then how can you expect this relationship to work out? Now that you have an issue in your financials, you should talk to your partner about it. If she really loves you, she wouldn’t mind it and will try her best to help you out.”

“This is my personal opinion. If you’ve decided to start a relationship you should always be transparent and truthful about your situation. If you want to keep it to yourself, do you think you’re able to handle that? In the future if you decide to get married and start a family, there are plenty of things you need to discuss with your partner.”

“I think you should just be honest and tell her about it. If she is understanding of your situation, then you’ve found the right one, if not you would be in dire stress. If you really don’t want to be transparent about your situation, I’d suggest you just break up. Then, you won’t have the stress and can pay off your debts.”

“In a relationship, if you feel tired and stressed, you should talk to your partner about it, if your partner is unable to understand, then you should end this relationship.”

“I think you should just be honest of your situation. If she loves you, she will go through it with you, but if she chooses to leave then you should let go too. If not, your life and your mental health would suffer.”
