No matter the occupation or position, one shouldn’t be ashamed of their work and skills as they’re living life honestly. Just recently, a curry puff seller, Jasmin Panoot has shared his inspiring story of how he turned RM40 into RM80k a month by selling curry puffs at the roadside.
M’sia curry puff seller earns up to RM80k a month, says he’s grateful
According to local newspaper Kosmo!, it was reported that the 49-year-old vendor had begun selling curry puffs about 7 years ago. As he recalled his early days, he said that he would walk about 10 kilometres every day around Laman Diraja Pontian and Dataran Pontian selling epok-epok (curry puff).
With only RM40 capital to start a new venture after several fails, he then decided to sell curry puffs by carrying a basket while walking under the sun. Unfortunately, this has caused some immobility in both his hands, which made him buy a trolley to help ease the process.
“Being a vendor is not easy and initially I struggled immensely to overcome the embarrassment I felt becoming a street vendor”, he said.
However, with his wife and seven children depending on him, he had no choice but to buckle up and hustle for the sake of his family. Fortunately, with the help of the Rubber Smallholder Authority he was able to finally open a small stall and make about 2,000 to 5,000 curry puffs a day.
After years of hard work, his curry puff business has taken off and he currently earns about RM80k a month! With the expansion of his business, Jasmin is able to create work opportunities for young adults in Malaysia and currently has over 15 staffs working for him. He then expressed his gratitude saying that he feels immensely grateful not only for the opportunities he received but also to be able to create opportunities for other people.
Being passionate about his curry puffs, Jasmin revealed that his curry puffs come in various fillings.
“The curry puffs I sell come with different fillings like potatoes, eggs, sardines, chicken, beef, pineapple, cheese, and vermicelli”, he said, adding on that the price for his curry puffs would range around RM1 to RM5.
He also mentioned that frozen curry puffs are typically sold at RM8 per pack, but it all boils down to the size of the curry puffs where he offers small, medium and large curry puffs.
When asked about his future plans with his business, Jasmin revealed that he has managed to get in contact with Singapore entrepreneurs and is looking at ways to enter into the market.
Well done, Jasmin! We hope you’re proud of how far you’ve come!
