As the cost-of-living rises, many are struggling to make ends meet despite earning a salary every month. Just recently, minister of communications, Fahmi Fadzil has shared a rather heartbreaking story of a delivery rider.
M’sian delivery rider forced to borrow RM200 from his friends to pay his phone bill
According to the post, Fahmi shared that while he was on the way to his office, he met a delivery rider, Sdr. Nazirul and decided to have a chat with him. Upon understanding, he found out that Nazirul actually has a wife and two children to look after. Earning only RM4,000 a month, he is finding it difficult to make ends meet, causing him to not be able to pay for his phone bill.
“He hasn’t paid his phone bill in 2 months”, wrote Fahmi.
Seeing that he had no other choice, Nazirul decided to borrow some money from his friend, so he could pay for his phone bill. A phone is definitely an essential for Nazirul as it is his source of income. Without it, he wouldn’t be able to take orders from delivery platforms, further driving him away from making ends meet.
“As a father myself, I understand the struggles that he is going through and while speaking to him, an idea popped into my head”, said Fahmi.
Returning to his office, he immediately started contacting telco companies to see if they’re able to come up with a phone plan that caters to the delivery riders only. Thankfully, after a lengthy discussion, a new telco plan will be announced soon to help the delivery riders.
Speaking on behalf of the government, Fahmi shared that they understood how important delivery riders are in our daily lives and will strive to help them lessen their burdens.
We hope the Nazirul will be able to tide through the hardships with his family.
