A money changer fell prey to a robbery attempt earlier this week on Monday, after a number of men were seen laying ambush on his vehicle at the lobby of a condominium in Iskandar Puteri, Johor. Eyewitness footage was recorded as the crime took place from a unit that overlooked the lobby area, showing how a black pickup truck was blockaded by a white sedan from the back and a black sedan in the front.
Robbers attempt heist on money changer in Johor
Three men could then be seen visibly attempting to wrestle the money changer, who appears to be behind the wheel of the pickup truck out as he drove back and forth repeatedly, hoping to ram into the vehicles that were in his way in order to make his escape. He could also be heard repeatedly blaring his horn in hopes of catching the attention of bystanders to no avail.
One of the thieves even appeared to cling on to the pickup truck as it backed into the white sedan, before his other accomplices managed to pry the doors open and gain access into the car.
But the victim appeared to put up a good fight despite the fact that some of the assailants could be seen brandishing machetes, and somehow managed to gain control of his vehicle for a split-second before nudging the black sedan from his way to drive off.
However, the victim did not manage to make it too far as his car would come to a screeching halt after its bumper was ripped clean off and black smoke emerged from his exhaust. It was at that moment that the robbers managed to catch up with the victim, with one opening the rear door to haul a large bag away, before the video cuts off. The clip was subsequently shared online, where it found its way on China Press.
Police managed to nab suspects within 24 hours
According to a subsequent news report by BERNAMA on the incident, it has since been reported that two men, aged 40 and 45, who were allegedly involved in the gang robbery have been detained by the local authorities on the very same day that the crime was committed.
Iskandar Puteri district police chief ACP Rahmat Ariffin said that the crime took place at 9.45am, while the arrests were made at 10.15am and 9.00pm later on. Machetes and RM10,000 in cash were also seized.
Both have since admitted to hitting the victim’s car and causing him injury, with one of them possessing a prior criminal record. A third suspect still remains at large.
The victim on the other hand sustained injuries to the head, but had since been discharged after seeking treatment from hospital.
Eyewitnesses with information regarding the case are urged to report to the Iskandar Puteri police headquarters to assist in investigations.
