Over the past few months, the Malaysian government has introduced a brand-new initiative in hopes of combatting one of the most salient and pressing issues to weigh heavily on the minds of most ordinary citizens: the steadily rising cost of living. Dubbed Menu Rahmah, Malaysians can now enjoy a hot lunch or dinner at participating businesses for the modest sum of just RM5 per meal.

Adopted by a number of leading businesses including local supermarket chain Mydin, fast-food chain Burger King, and even smaller businesses such as one local fruit vendor who has started selling RM4.99 packs of durians, the list of participating names only continues to grow. Naturally, the move has been well-received by members of the public who are glad for the increasingly varied options for consumers looking to make every Ringgit count.

Now, it would seem that the Menu Rahmah concept has expanded beyond just food as 34-year-old owner of Homestay Sarasera in Melaka, Nurul Himmah Muhammad Kamaruzzaman has recently announced that she will be offering B40 communities stays at her property for only RM5 per night!

Speaking to local news outlet Malaysia Gazette, she explains that her decision to offer the discounted rate was to contribute to the government’s ongoing endeavour to lend a hand to the underprivileged, while also helping to bolster Melaka’s tourism as part of next year’s Visit Melaka Year 2024 campaign.

“I figured that if we already have Menu Rahmah, why can’t I help those who are less fortunate who may not have the opportunity to spend time with their families in a luxurious homestay equipped with a swimming pool for only RM5 a night?” she said.

Wanted to take after Menu Rahmah to help those in need

She adds that she empathises with their struggle as she herself hailed from humble beginnings, having used to help her mother sell vegetables at their night market stall after her father passed away when she was just aged four.

“This is why I hope that this small, limited effort on my part will give great meaning to those who are aspiring for it.” she adds.

The promotional price offered is drastically reduced from the original price of RM650 a night on regular weekdays and RM750 a night on public holidays and weekends. With that said, Nurul said that in order to be eligible for the discount, customers need to first submit their income documents to ensure that it is truly going to families in need.

She also mentions that the promotion will be held from February to March, and is subject to availability.

“My intention is for large families of 10 or 15 people to gather together and enjoy the amenities of having a swimming pool, while also hosting a barbecue party to bolster family ties.”
