The Malaysian pasar malam, otherwise known as a night market, is one of our nation’s most prized attractions, for their assortment of cheap goods, delicious food, and bustling atmosphere. Depending on where you live, there are several night markets around Klang Valley that will peak one’s interest and among them includes the one in Taman Connaught, Cheras.

Considered as one of the longest pasar malam stretches in the country, it is host to a wide assortment of food vendors selling both local as well as international tidbits and snacks, making it a food adventurer’s haven.

Scottish food vlogger leaves netizens in stitches with his reaction to trying stinky tofu

Which is likely why Scottish food vlogger Dale Philip recently decided to visit the renowned pasar malam and document his experience in a 4-minute vlog. At the time of his visit, he noticed that one stall in particular had attracted wraparound lines. Out of curiosity, he decided to go over to the front of the line and asked those who were queuing up what they were waiting for.

To his surprise, they were all eagerly anticipating their chance to try out the popular, if not sometimes divisive, Chinese snack: stinky tofu.

He proceeded to ask the two girls if the tofu really is that stinky to which they said yes, but quickly assured him that it ‘tastes really good’. Another man who overheard the conversation then chimed in by comparing it with durians.

Seeing that there was a long line of people, Dale proceeded to ask the man if he could help him purchase a portion of tofu. Agreeing to do so, he helped Dale to purchase four pieces to try.

Eager to give the delicacy a go, the food vlogger then found himself a quiet spot next to a drain to savour his very first stinky tofu experience. Holding up the four pieces in a small cup, Dale told audiences that he only spent RM5 for the entire portion.

To his surprise upon poking at the tofu pieces, he realised that they were stiff as opposed to being soft and silken.

He then took a piece up and proceeded to smell it. As he took a quick whiff of the tofu, Dale described the scent as being similar to that of ‘stale socks’ before going in for a quick bite. Safe to say by the way his face scrunched up, he did not appear to enjoy it.

“They’re like cookies. It’s a crispy thing.”

“I don’t know why I expected it to be different, it tastes exactly like how it smelled!”, he said.

Cleaning himself up, he proceeded to throw away the remainder of his stinky tofu into the bin before heading off in search of a drink to wash down the lingering taste in his mouth.

His second foray into pasar malam cuisine took him to a truck selling a variety of coffees and other drinks, including one they named Milo Godzilla. With the promise of its sweet richness, Dale did not hesitate to order one before guzzling it down.

Following his video, many Malaysians were left tickled by his reaction. Netizens from other parts of the world appeared to be similarly put-off by the way Dale described the tofu, and wondered why people enjoyed the highly pungent snack.
