KL sinkhole: Camera allegedly catches the saree of sinkhole victim, efforts made to clear sewage blockage

Last Friday, an Indian woman on vacation with her family had fallen into a sinkhole after just walking along Jalan Masjid India in Kuala Lumpur. Entering day 8 of the rescue-recovery operations of G. Vijaya Lakshmi, the team is now focusing their efforts in clearing a 15-metre sewage blockage.

According to local newspaper Sin Chew Daily, it was reported at 12:30am, August 30 that the camera used to record the condition of the sewage has allegedly captured a saree worn by the victim. Unfortunately, the team has yet to be able to confirm as the sewage blockage is too severe.

At 1:24am, rescue-recovery mission was still happening, and pipes were prepared to perform water suction, as an attempt to clear the blockage. On top of that, 2 scuba divers from the JBPM Northern Region Academy were also sent to help clear the debris. Unfortunately, even after 30 minutes of clearing the debris, they were nowhere close.

The operation then came to a temporary halt at 5am but the rescue team, consisting of the Royal Malaysia Police, Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), Kuala Lumpur City Hall and the Department of Minerals and Geosciences were already at the scene at 8am, ready to resume their operation.

Latest update by local media has reported that a hearse from the police department has arrived at the scene, however operations have yet to resume.

To date, various methods such as jetting, flushing and water suction has been used to clear the incident site, in hopes of recovering the victim soonest. Just yesterday, 2 K9 units were also deployed to the area for a search.
