Just a few days ago, Malaysians were all thrilled to find our very own para-athlete, Cheah Liek Hou has won the gold medal at the men’s singles SU5 (physical impairment), in badminton. With that said, many were touched to witness the moment where Malaysia’s national anthem was played. With his achievement in the recent Paralympics, Cheah was then promised a RM1 million reward.

Receiving the funds under the National Sports Incentive Scheme (Shakam), for his hard work and sacrifices, the 36-year-old shuttler has shared that the first thing he would do is donate a part of the money to charity.
“I want to give back to society”, said the noble man.

While Cheah has yet to decide on which non-profit organisation he would donate, he has expressed his desires to help out orphanages, old folks home as well as the differently abled community. Other than that, local daily NST has reported that this isn’t the first time Cheah has used his rewards to help others.
Prior to this, after his victory in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, he had donated a part of his RM1 milllion reward and an additional RM100,000 from FWD Takaful to charity.
Challenges and setbacks made him stronger
Back in 2023, Cheah has faced several setbacks and defeats, including a loss to one of his younger Indonesian rivals, Dheva Anrimusthi, at the Hangzhou Asian Para Games. With his losses, many have started doubting Cheah’s capabilities, and his ability to bounce back. Disregarding the negativity, Cheah was able to prove himself once again by winning his eighth world title in Thailand early 2024.

Reflecting on his recent win in the Paris 2024 Paralympics, Cheah shared that it was not an easy route, especially after the departure of his coach, Rashid Sidek back in 2022. After securing another coach for himself, Coach Nova, Cheah remained focused and goal-driven, which eventually led him to his victory.
“Winning a title is amazing, but honestly, defending a title is so much harder”, he revealed.
With his current win in the Paris Paralympics, Cheah has once again proven himself and to those who doubted him.
