The saying “blood is thicker than water” may not be true, as you may find strangers caring for you more. Suffering a stroke over a decade ago, this Malaysian man was distraught to find out that his own elder brother had sent him to an old folks’ home.
M’sian man sent to old folks’ home by his sibling after suffering a stroke
Sharing his story to local daily Harian Metro, the man, who only wants to be identified as Ali revealed that he suffered from a stroke back in 2014. Instead of being taken care of by his sibling, he was sent to the Husna Arrashid Elderly Care Center in Setapak. Despite feeling heartbroken, Ali kept his feelings unexpressed as his brother did not say anything either.

Prior to being transferred to his current nursing home, Ali was placed in an elderly care centre in Sentul for over 4 years.
“After suffering from a stroke, I was sent to the hospital. When I was discharged, I was immediately taken to a nursing home, instead of where I lived”, he recalled.
Living alone after the divorce, Ali expressed that he was sad at the thought that he is spending his remaining days in the old folks’ home. However, as time passes, he has embraced the fact emphasising that he very well cared for in the old folks’ home.
“I’m used to it now; I have friends and am well-cared for”
When asked if he has children, Ali replied saying that he does and occasionally, they will visit him at the old folks’ home. Each time they visit, the children would bring food, but never once has he received an invite from his children to live with him.

“They never extended an invite to live with them, but even if they did, I don’t think I would go”, he said, adding that he is now happy here.
With his meals and accommodation taken care off, the staff at the home would also help him with his medication, while the friends he made at the home offered him encouragement and helps him with his movement.
While it’s unfortunate that he was betrayed by his family, we’re happy to see that Ali’s needs are well taken care of.
