Over the years, YouTubers have come up with different challenges to entertain the public and one of the challenges that have caught on would definitely be going on a spending budget. Just recently, Hong Kong Youtuber Mario has shared a video of himself trying to spend RM20 in Kuala Lumpur for a day.

In his video, he shared that he will be challenging himself to spend RM20 in a day and while walking he stumbled upon a Russian kid that has been living in Kuala Lumpur for some time. He asked the kid what he would normally have for breakfast, to which he said Nasi Goreng, a classic fried rice that would cost around RM6 per plate.

He proceeded to share his plan with the Russian kid, and being a kindhearted person, the kid decided to give Mario his drink and RM1 to help him with his challenge. Touched by the kindness he just received, he then set foot to find a cheaper option for breakfast and decided to go with Roti Canai.

“Roti Canai is an extremely famous and classic breakfast in Malaysia!’, he said.

Mario added that the texture of the Roti Canai is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, making it absolutely delectable when eaten with curry. After his savoury and hearty meal that only costs him RM1.30, he went around the heart of Kuala Lumpur and checked out McDonald’s in a nearby mall.

He highlighted that the fast-food chain restaurant offers menu rahmah, an affordable option for the public to save some money when looking for something to eat. He commended the government on how great the initiative was to help the locals before heading to his next destination.

Getting lost in KL, experiencing kindness

For lunch, Mario successfully found a temple that has a canteen which serves vegetarian meals. He headed to the temple and decided to get a plate of rice along with some tofu, vegetables and imitation char siu. His total came up to RM6.50 and that’s definitely a great steal!

“I found out that the canteen is run solely with the help of volunteers and donations so I decided to donate that RM1 I received from the Russian kid”, he said.

After lunch, he decided to take the bus that circles around Kuala Lumpur for free and got off at a random stop. After walking around, he found himself to be at an area where there isn’t much to do. He stumbled upon an old-school Chinese herb stall and went in to take a look.

He asked the employee working in the stall what he could get for dinner that’s cheap, to which the man answered him saying he could get Ramly Burger. After that, he found a marketplace that sells street food and decided to buy Tauhu Pentol as a snack. Taking his first bite, he described the snack as “value for money”, as it was packed with flavour and different textures!

Mario then realised that he was far from where he could get onto a free bus and decided to ask the locals for help. After multiple tries, he managed to find a motorcyclist that has an extra helmet and he was willing to send him over to the nearest MRT station. After the MRT ride, he was left with RM4 and found a store that sells Ramly burger.

Feeling excited, he ordered one burger and waited patiently as the man cooked his food. After collecting and trying his food, he mentioned that he understood why Malaysians love Ramly burger.

“It’s packed with flavour along with vegetables and an egg, what more can you ask for?”, he said.

Recalling his day, Mario mentioned that he was very happy to have succeeded in the challenge and was delighted that he didn’t have to resort into having bread or biscuits for his meals.

“The food was great, but I had a taste of how kind Malaysians are and that, to me is much more meaningful”, he said.

We’re glad to see you enjoying yourself in Malaysia, Mario!
